Life Chez Assad

What better way is there to ring in the new year than to read a column about the Assad family? Fun, fun, fun.

At FoxNews.com, I have written about Bashar Assad. Who assumed power on the death of his dad, Hafez. Who intended his eldest son, Bassel, to be his successor. But Bassel was killed in a car crash.

Actually, Hafez would probably have made his eldest child, Bushra, dictator, but she was a girl.

Today, Bashar and his (fetching) wife Asma have a son, named after his grandfather, Hafez. He is already talked about as No. 3. As Assad dictator No. 3.

Since 1970, only two men have ruled Syria: Hafez and Bashar, father and son. There couldn’t be a third Assad, could there? Well, there have been three Kims in North Korea.

Anyway, that column (adapted from my book about the sons and daughters of dictators). The Assad family isn’t fun, but they are, I’m sorry to say, interesting.
