It’s what Bill Buckley might have called a “planted axiom” — the idea that those on the left are well-motivated. While it’s usually a good idea to give your opponents the benefit of the doubt as to their motives, there are times when people reveal their souls. Sean Penn, it seems, has now added “El Chapo” — the Mexican drug lord — to the list of thugs with whom he’s pleased to associate. This is enough to cause even the New York Times to wonder about his ethics (and those of Rolling Stone, which ran the interview).
Penn has in the past thrown his arms around Hugo Chávez, Raul Castro, and Argentine president Cristina Kirchner. Now it’s Guzman, “El Chapo.” It’s all consistent. What appears to attract Penn to leftist dictators is not some perverted or naïve hope to improve the lot of the poor but good old fashioned attraction to violence and murder.
