Regulating the Convention

Several of us Cornerites had posts yesterday about what the delegates should do if Trump comes to Cleveland with a plurality and Cruz is in second. I argued that the delegates should pick Cruz in that case.

Today I want to turn to a different question: Should the convention adopt a rule saying that a candidate has to have won a majority of delegates in eight states before being nominated? The Romney forces put that rule in place last time. Trump and Cruz both want the rule renewed, which would confine the convention to picking between the two of them; Kasich doesn’t want it.

On this one, I’m with Kasich: The delegates should not have their choices limited. Trump and Cruz have been saying all through the campaign that the nomination process shouldn’t be rigged. Keeping people off the ballot seems like a pretty good example of rigging it.
