Trump’s speech, which I read rather than watched, seemed like a mass of contradictions and empty boasts. We’re going to start trade wars, make freeloading countries pay their own way, and have better relations with our allies than before. Other candidates are too eager for war in the Middle East, and we should have intervened to protect Christians there. Isis’s days are numbered, but I won’t tell you how I’ll make them so. Oh, and nobody else has a “coherent foreign policy.” Even when he’s scripted, talking about policy of any kind is not Trump’s strong suit.
