Scott Walker is reportedly about to pull out of the GOP presidential race. I’m sure it’s a tough decision for the governor, a scrappy competitor with many improbable victories under his belt, but it’s also the right one. His presidential candidacy always looked better on paper than it did on the ground or on the air. Now Walker can focus on governing Wisconsin — and helping lead the turn to the Right currently underway in the Blue-tinged states of the Midwest.
I’m not discounting the importance of winning presidential races. But conservatives in particular should embrace the reality that American government is more than just the White House or Capitol Hill. It encompasses state governments and thousands of local ones, each presenting opportunities for reformers who embrace free enterprise, limited government, and innovative, market-based solutions to public problems. Walker has proven himself to be a courageous and innovative leader. He will continue to be so, and not only for the residents of his own state.
