4:39 PM: Six police officers in Baton Rouge, La., were shot after engaging in gunfire with an armed suspect. Three officers were killed — two from the Baton Rouge Police Department and one sheriff’s deputy.
One suspect was killed at the scene. At this time, there is not an active shooter situation, though local officials are asking citizens to stay away from the crime scene.
The suspect was reportedly dressed in all black, and carrying a long gun.
The violence comes two weeks after Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man, was controversially shot and killed by Baton Rouge police officers while on the ground.
“The hatred just has to stop,” said Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards at a press conference, adding that the shooting was an “unspeakable, heinous act.”
East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff Sid J. Gautreaux appealed for calm, saying: “This is not so much about gun control, as it is what’s in men’s hearts.”
