I sat down recently with the eminent economist and historian Deirdre McCloskey on the occasion of the publication of Bourgeois Equality, the third volume of her trilogy celebrating the bourgeois virtues. In our conversation we discussed common misunderstandings of capitalism, why the Industrial Revolution happened where and when it did, the importance of being able to “have a go,” the Protestant Reformation’s influence on the rise of capitalism, the ethics of income inequality, how the next 200 years can bring global prosperity, and what it means to be a “post-modern, free market, quantitative, Episcopalian, feminist Aristotelian.”
