. . . would you please consider a generous contribution to National Review, in appreciation for the exceptional writing and analysis and thought you find here, day in and out? By generous, of course, we mean what you can afford — of course we are deeply appreciative for $1,000, but the same goes for your $10. Who are we to question means?!

But we can question this: If you come here frequently — if you find the writing of Jay, Jonah, Victor, Charlie, Kevin, Ramesh, Mona, Kat, Andy, Eliana, Tim, David, Ian, Jim et al to be consistently smart, influential, and beneficial to how you view current events and trends — and you do not make an occasional contribution, knowing of our difficult financial state (and surely you know that), then how do you explain to others who are with you in this conservative cause why it is good for them to dig deep and help NR, but not you?

Really, isn’t it time for you to step up? If it applies, then please be responsive. We ask because the need is sincere. And we hope you will give because the cause is so damn important.

Now, these past two weeks, hundreds of NRO denizens have given, God love ‘em, and even shared sentiments as they have done so. Here are some from the last few days:

  • Dennis with the steady nerves and the generous checkbook ($100) advises: “Conservatives are in for tough times. Keep up the good work and . . .  stay calm!!” Thanks to some stuff in the medicine cabinet, and your kindness, we’re hanging in Big D. Thanks.
  • Gloria drops $25 on NR and then reminisces: “Bill Buckley’s weekly ‘Firing Line’ was the opening of my eyes to conservatism. I was conservative and did not even realize it. May he rest in peace. He was a good man. P.S. All three of my high-achieving kids are conservative as well. Hard work, responsible and good to their core plowed the path to success.” Gloria you are glorious. And geez, we miss Bill.
  • John tosses 25 smackers at us and yet feels sheepish: “I would give more but Obama took it from me.” Too true, John.
  • Bruce also sends $100 and gets his Tiny Tim on: “God Bless us, everyone. God help us, everyone.” Yeah, not that Tiny Tim. Amen Bruce, and thanks!
  • Now talk about generous: $250 arrives from Gregory who praises: “Love the contributors to NR. Keep fighting the good fight. Best to all at NR.” Best taken and back at ya. Thanks Greg.
  • And we’ll wrap it up with this comment from Michael, attended by a kindly $30 contribution: “Small donation made in the fervent hope that it may, if only even for a few seconds, allow Kevin Williamson to smile. Cheers!”

Michael, be assured: KDW often has a smile on his lips, and brings it to those of others. To call him an exceptional colleague, in every way, would be a gross understatement. Still, I like how you think — maybe those of you on the cusp of giving will do so knowing that, indeed, it will make the great writer terribly happy. Do that here. And to paraphrase Bruce, God bless you, everyone.
