In my line of work, I get the weirdest invitations. A couple years ago, Deborah Harry invited me to a party back in NYC (she’s still a lovely woman, but looks much harder now than when Blondie was a prominent band).
Today, I got an e-mail from JFK conspiracy theorists having a convention in New Orleans in October. The e-mail invites me to “a Birthday Party for Lee Harvey Oswald, at The Kamp Restaurant [in] Harahan, LA . . . with Coast to Coast AM’s George Noory and Oswald’s girlfriend, Judyth Vary Baker.” I kid you not.
Unfortunately, I must decline, because I’d feel like a party crasher; unlike Ted Cruz’s dad, I barely even knew the guy. In a way, though, I regret it, because I have a line that always goes over big with the conspiracists: “Sure, we all know Lee Harvey Oswald was a Communist! But I’m more interested in the politics of the guy who shot President Kennedy.” (Trust me, the line goes over big.)
