One of Donald Trump’s amazing abilities is his power to somehow compel previously reasonably-clear-thinking surrogates to go out and say the most ridiculous things. Yesterday Kellyanne Conway said, “he doesn’t hurl personal insults.” This is like saying, “he doesn’t have a distinctive haircut” or “he doesn’t put his name on buildings.” We’ve all seen them. We’ve all heard them. No one believes that Trump hasn’t hurled personal insults in the past, and only the most naïve optimist would think that he would go long without doing it again. And then this morning, Trump adds…
Tried watching low-rated @Morning_Joe this morning, unwatchable! @morningmika is off the wall, a neurotic and not very bright mess!

Some day, when things calm down, I’ll tell the real story of @JoeNBC and his very insecure long-time girlfriend, @morningmika. Two clowns!

It would be easy to write, for the millionth time, “there goes the pivot.”
She made the “doesn’t hurl personal insults” comment after Clinton Foundation Donor George Stephanopolous played video of Conway saying, back when she worked for a super-PAC backing Ted Cruz, “it’s vulgar. And do I want somebody who hurls personal insults or who goes and talks about philosophical differences?”
She could have said, “I wish he would avoid doing this, if we stick to issues we can win, the issues favor us,” etcetera. But instead she offered the flat denial of reality. That’s a lot to ask of a potential supporter.
