CBS is launching a new Star Trek franchise. Of course I’ll watch it, at least for a while, because I have to. But I’m pretty ambivalent about CBS’s take on “exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”
Between the original and its spin-offs racism is very well-covered ground. There were a few dabblings into gender-identity issues in TNG, but they were very bad episodes entertainment-wise. They took a whack at Israel-Palestinian themes with Bajorans, but they largely abandoned those because they couldn’t handle the mix between agitprop and entertainment. I cannot wait to see how they bring ”Black Lives Matter” and “Occupy Wall Street” to the 24th century. Actually, scratch that. I can wait.
