Today on the homepage, I have Part II of my “Michigan Journal.” This one covers Ann Arbor, primarily — my hometown. “A small citadel of the Left,” I have long termed it. Of course, it is more than that.
I also have a dollop of Lansing, where I attended, and spoke at, a luncheon of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Let me add a note here, if I may.
At the conclusion of the lunch, I met a man who heard Bill Buckley debate, many years ago. It was at Harvard, and WFB’s opponent was James Wechsler, a prominent and liberal journalist. The students were looking forward to seeing Wechsler eat this young right-winger alive. Didn’t happen. Quite the opposite.
Another memory of the man in Lansing: WFB’s wife, Pat, sat in the first row, with an enormously wide-brimmed hat — which made a kind of statement. It was “out there.”
I can just see her, and see Bill. Easy to do.
