Oh, sure, nowBernie Sanders stops defending Hillary Clinton on her e-mails. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Sanders indicates it’s a perfectly legitimate topic for the FBI to investigate:
On the issue of Mrs. Clinton’s emails, Mr. Sanders didn’t say he regretted his debate remarks. “You get 12 seconds to say these things,” he said of the debate setting. “There’s an investigation going on right now. I did not say, ‘End the investigation.’ That’s silly.…Let the investigation proceed unimpeded.”
Of course, in the infamous debate exchange, Sander said, “let me say something that may not be great politics. But I think the secretary is right, and that is that the American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mails.”
Not long ago, Sanders was ahead of Clinton in Iowa and he now trails her, and his lead has nearly disappeared in New Hampshire. Unfortunately for Sanders, he said aloud exactly what the Clinton campaign wanted to hear, and effectively defused the issue of her private e-mail server and transfer of classified information, at least in the Democratic primary. (Martin O’Malley, who sounded like he wanted to go after Clitnon on this issue before the debate, also held back after the debate audience roared approval.)
Sanders is learning that in politics, as in life, it’s difficult to get a second chance at a first impression. If he tears into Hillary for this in the next debate, she will accuse him of flip-flopping and opportunism.
